ITF: Where do you shop for food?
AP: A variety of places: I hit up large-scale grocers for the basics, and I visit an organic co-op for produce and specialty items.
ITF: What is the single most important thing on your mind when you are shopping for food?
AP: I love animals, so it’s imperative that my purchases do not cause them any harm. By avoiding meat, dairy, eggs, and other animal products, my dollars do not support the American factory farming industry that kills over 10 billion land animals per year. Becoming vegan is the best way for consumers to display true love for all creatures.
ITF: How often do you shop?
AP: I take one trip to each store per week.
ITF: How do you plan your weekly meals? Create a spreadsheet of fly by the seat of your pants?
AP: I make a list of meals for the week on Sunday, then I layout my shopping list in accordance with the grocery store aisles. I like things organized. J
ITF: What is the oldest item in the fridge right now?
AP: Homemade cashew cream recently thawed from the freezer. It’s a deliciously creamy substitute for dairy-based thickeners in baked goods, soups, sauces, smoothies, etc…You simply combine cashews and water in a blender and “Voila!”
ITF: What convenience product can you not live without?
AP: Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread. It tastes fabulous, has no hydrogenated oils, zero grams of trans fat, and is vegan. How can you go wrong?
ITF: What brands do you swear by? Why?
AP: I think it’s very important to eat as many natural, unprocessed foods as possible, however many people who are new to vegetarianism or veganism miss some of the old standards. If that’s the case, a little mock-meat treat from Gardein or Field Roast might hit the spot! I love the flavors and textures that both brands have mastered.
ITF: What cooking utensil/piece of equipment/appliance do you live for?
AP: I’ve recently jumped on the juicing wagon and love my Breville high-speed juicer. If I’m feeling like I could use a few extra nutrients in my system, I can throw an apple, cucumber, kale leaf, and handful of carrots into the machine to get a tasty boost.
ITF: What are your go-to food/nutrition/culinary/cooking website/s, book or cookbook?
AP: I adore Chef Tal Ronnen‘s book, The Conscious Cook. His recipes are hearty and rich, and his flavor profiles are accessible yet interesting.
ITF: What words of wisdom or advice do you have for other folks who are doing their best every day to fill the fridge?
AP: My advice is to give a plant-based diet a try! Even a commitment to “Meatless Mondays” will make you feel happier and healthier. Your body will function better, and your conscious will be clearer too. Vegan food provides a pathway to a meaningful, compassionate, and delicious life!
Thank you Adrianne!
