Going Full Gear for National Bike Riding Month!

Hi everyone! Robinsbite intern Jaime Ruisi here. Put your car keys down and take out your bike! It’s National Bike Riding Month.  Why celebrate bike riding? The Bike League created this exciting opportunity to celebrate the  many reasons we ride.  Commuting to work, to school, for exercise or just for fun, bike riding is the healthy way to go.  So, let’s start pedaling.

Bike riding is an easy way to incorporate aerobic exercise into your busy lives.  Whether you’re a recreational rider, mountain bike rider, or stunt rider, the benefits are alike. Bike riding improves strength, muscle tone, heart and mental health.   A New Economics Foundation report stated, “studies comparing the experiences of commuting by bicycle and car report that cyclists find their mode of transport at least as flexible and convenient as those who use cars, with lower stress and greater feelings of freedom, relaxation and excitement.”  Who doesn’t want freedom?

Bike riding allows you to gain an appreciation and connection with nature.  If you choose to ride in your neighborhood or a path in the park, you just can’t help but to soak in your surroundings.  As you continue to become an active rider, it is inevitable you will meet a whole community of cyclists.  This healthy act suddenly turns into a social event you can share with newly found friends.  Here are some simple tips you can follow to join the bike riding frenzy!

Choose to bike when…

  1. You go to the convenience store for milk (make sure to bring a backpack).
  2. You’re meeting up with friends at the local movie theater.
  3. You live within 2 miles of your job site.
  4. You and your friends just can’t decided what to do today!

Always remember to wear a helmet!

What path will you choose?

I want “lower stress and greater feelings of freedom, relaxation and excitement” haha:) I really should start biking more to change up my typical workout routine of running, stairmaster and weights. A little variety would be good for me! Great post, Jaime:)

Thanks Kylie! I remember that routine all too well. I felt so much better once when I made the bike switch!
