25 Jan Do you Blot Your Pizza?
To those folks who religiously blot their pizza with the hopes of saving some calories and fat grams: unfortunately, the numbers are less than stellar when it comes down to the savings. The Internet (not always a source of statistical evidence) provides ranges of 20-80 calories, but without an actual scientific measure (which I’m not prepared to conduct), it’s really difficult to know. Of course, I’d never dissuade someone from doing as I, too, am one of those blotters. Sure, I know I’m not saving THAT many calories and fat grams-but I’m saving some. Actually, I do it more to lessen the gross out grease factor.
You know what I’m talking about–the little puddles of grease that form in the pockets of the toasted cheese or in the cusps of the pepperoni slices. The shimmer/sheen is predominately found on slices from the take out/order in pizza places. It’s rare that we order pizza in our home, so it had been awhile since I’d had the need to blot. Once that pizza box hit the table and the lid was lifted to reveal our pristine cheese pizza, I was instantly loaded down with paper towels. We had a good blotting session and then proceeded to enjoy our pizza.
Did I save calories and fat? Probably. Did I lessen the gross out factor? Definitely. Did I enjoy my pizza? Every last bite!
Tell me, are you a blotter? What other foods do you blot?

Posted at 11:10h, 25 Januarylately, instead of running out to buy a breakfast sandwich when the craving hits – I will make my own with an english muffin, egg whites, and a local sausage patty from the market down the road. I MUST blot that sausage after cooking! I just HAVE to get rid of that grease, ya know!?

Posted at 11:18h, 25 JanuaryI blot due to the “gross out grease factor.” As an RD, I’m often accused that I’m trying to cut calories. The pizza I tend not to blot is the brick-oven varieties that often have a drizzle of olive oil on top. That reminds me… I have some left over brick-oven pizza in the fridge!

Posted at 15:40h, 25 JanuaryAlex-I’m exactly the same-“upscale” pizzas tend to not have as much grease to blot–higher quality ingredients. Enjoy your dinner tonight!

Posted at 06:50h, 26 JanuaryWhat an intersting blog post! I ‘blot’ when I can see a greasy layer on top.. other wise I try not to (not too sure how socially acceptable it is?!).
