08 Oct Veg-Out Challenge: Vegetarian Awareness Month
Intern Jaime here!
October is National Vegetarian Awareness Month! Whether you’re a vegan, vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian, or semi-vegetarian there are a lot of reasons to celebrate a plant-based lifestyle! For those of you hard-core carnivores who need some convincing, I’ve got just the solution. I turned to the vegetarian bible, The Vegetarian Times for 10 reasons why you should incorporate a vegetarian diet into your October meals.
1. Vegetarian diets are the secret to longevity.
2. You can stop counting calories for weight loss.
3. Goodbye salmonella! Food-borne illnesses are a thing of the past.
4. Gain a natural buzz of energy.
5. You’ll save the environment!
6. …And you’ll save the lives of factory-farmed animals!
7. Your plate will look like a rainbow.
8. Go green! Conserve fossil fuels.
9. Bye, bye chronic disease.
10. Plant-based foods taste good. Thai? Indian? Mexican? Yes, please!
And now for the challenge…
Week 1: Take the Meatless Monday Pledge!
Go meat-less one day a week. By cutting out meat on Mondays, you can still receive benefits associated with a full-blown vegetarian diet.
Week 2: You’re under arrest! Give me your meat.
Thoroughly explore the contents of your fridge, freezer, and pantry. Kick any chicken, burgers, sausages, and meat-based products to the curb.
Week 3: Find your favorite vegetarian recipe.
With all of the recipe databases available to us, there are an infinite number of recipes to be tested. Experiment and find the ones you truly love. Maybe even create one of your own! Try this.
Week 4: Dine out.
Visit a local ethnic restaurant. Thai, Indian, and Greek cuisines have endless vegetarian options that will keep you coming back for more.
