30 Jan Inside the Fridge welcomes RD, Deanna Segrave-Daly!
Based in Philadelphia, Deanna is a seasoned communications consultant and “food loving” registered dietitian specializing in nutrition and culinary projects. With fellow RD, Serena Ball, she co-owns Teaspoon Communications, a food-focused nutrition communications group that consults with a variety of health and food organizations. She has conducted hundreds of media interviews locally and nationally on a variety of topics ranging from healthy cooking tips to school nutrition. Her 5-year old daughter and “picky eater” husband keep her inspired to create appealing, good-for-you family cuisine.
ITF: Where do you shop for food?
DD: I do most of my food shopping at Trader Joe’s supplemented with trips to farmers’ market, local grocery store and my CSA share.
ITF: Do you love food shopping or dread it?
DD: Love it – and I don’t even mind taking my 5 year old daughter (though it’s getting a bit harder since she wants to push rather than sit in cart) She’s a Trader Joes fan too!
ITF: How often do you shop?
DD: At least twice a week
ITF: How do you plan your weekly meals? Create a spreadsheet of fly by the seat of your pants?
DD: Ah, I wish I had the discipline to have a spreadsheet – I just haven’t committed to that. Our weekly meals are definitely more of a “fly by the seat of your pants” with some favorite recipes that I can always throw together with staple ingredients in my pantry. Creating and testing recipes for clients and our blog helps fill in the “holes” with weekly meals.
ITF: What is the most coveted food in the fridge right now for each member of the household? Why?
DD: Me – ricotta salata from our local cheese shop
Daughter – toss up between raspberries or tofu hot dogs
Husband – Yuengling beer
ITF: What is the oldest item in the fridge right now?
DD: Homemade limoncello from last Christmas (which really should be in the freezer)
ITF: Do you believe in leftovers?
DD: Absolutely! Just about the only way I cook is to have leftovers for either fridge or freezer
ITF: What convenience product can you not live without?
DD: Canned beans and low sodium broths
ITF: What cooking utensil/piece of equipment/appliance do you live for?
DD: Microplane grater for zesting and fresh ground nutmeg
KitchenAid stand mixer for baking and bread making
ITF: What are your go-to food/nutrition/culinary/cooking website/s, book or cookbook?
- MyRecipes.com
- HealthyAperture.com
- The Fanny Farmer cookbook
- The Flavor Bible
- Colleagues blogs like The Spicy RD, The Professional Palate, Meal Makeover Moms and Inspired RD – to just name a few.
- One of my new favorites is Ancient Grains for Modern Meals by Marie Speck – I want to make every single recipe in that book.
ITF: What was the last meal you cooked from scratch?
DD: Pasta Fagioli (one of those staple meals I can make anytime)
ITF: What are you working on these days that you’d like to tell us about?
DD: The Recipe ReDux – a community of healthy food bloggers that believe all healthy food should be delicious – is really growing as it heads into it’s third year. My co-founders, Regan Jones & Serena Ball and I have some fun things in store – consider joining us (Robin is a fellow member!) Visit www.thereciperedux.com
Thanks Deanna!
