Share What's Good: Back to school lunch for moms

School is finally in session!

On the first day of school, a group of us preschool moms (Tara, Becca, Yana, Stacey, Julie and I) gathered at Tara’s house after the pictures were taken and uploaded to Facebook, the new cubbies had been identified, the kids had been kissed and the tears had been shed. We started what I hope to be a long lasting tradition–Back to School Mom’s Lunch.

It wasn’t fancy-but it was delicious-and it had something for everyone-even our vegan and gluten free moms.  All of the food items were fresh and simple. Nothing over the top-apples with peanut butter, guacamole, nuts -n-raisins, a hunk of cheese with crackers and edamame and tomato salad. Oh, and sweet potato tater tots.

Food (and a few drinks!) were on the menu, of course. But more importantly, our lunch turned to conversations about other interests (heading up fundraisers that supply toiletries to women’s organizations and volunteering with a children’s advocacy center), challenges (a son’s diagnoses with Type I diabetes at the age of 2), expectations (babies on the way and a recent move to Dallas) and the usual hopes and dreams for our families (insert hope/dream for family here).

I really needed this lunch. Not because I needed to be sustained with energy from food (well, I DID need that), but because I needed to be sustained by women who remind me to aspire to be who I am and to embrace that-regardless of the challenges, successes, expectations, disappointments or setbacks life throws at you. Because life does throw it at you-often. Surround yourself with non-judgemental people and those you respect. It helps.

I suspect I’ll need this lunch more often than once a year.

Love this idea. Will have to remember to start a 1st day of school mom’s lunch club when my girls start nursery school!
