Allie’s Chocolate Delight Smoothie

Frozen berries, milk and cocoa powder are all you need for this super simple and decadent smoothie.

When my sweet neighbor Allie came home from her surgical reconstructive mouth procedure, I knew her mouth would be wired shut, but what I didn’t realize was that she would be using a syringe as the sole method to get any food or drink in her system.  At 14, Allie didn’t realize how much it would STINK!  After bringing a vanilla milkshake for her and a bottle of wine for her mom and dad, it seemed like a fruity, sweet and chocolatey (not to mention nutrient dense) smoothie would be a good idea.

The timing for this little smoothie couldn’t have been better (it could have probably been better for Allie!) as it paired nicely with this month’s Recipe Redux theme.

Grab a Book & Cook

We’re playing a little party game at the end of 2016: Grab your nearest cookbook and ReDux the recipe on page 201, 16, 216 – or any combination of the number ‘2016.’

Taking a page (page 16, actually)  from The Greek Yogurt Kitchen cookbook by the one and only Toby Amidor, MS, RD, CDN, I created my own version of her Chocolate Delight.  Toby’s recipe is actually a bowl–I made mine into a smoothie. Other changes include using milk instead of yogurt,  adding frozen mixed berries instead of sliced strawberries and adding 1/2 T ground flaxseed for some added Omega 3’s. Especially relevant in this recipe is the addition of whipped cream and a light dusting of unsweetened cocoa powder for garnish.

Allie’s Chocolate Delight Smoothie

3/4 cup low fat milk

1 cup frozen mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries and blackberries)

1 T unsweetened cocoa powder

1 T honey

1/2 T ground flaxseed

whipped cream and cocoa powder for garnish (optional)

Add all ingredients to a blender and give it a whirl. Pour into cute glass and garnish with whipped cream and a dusting of cocoa powder. Present to 14-year-old neighbor.

Makes approximately 2 cups.

Get better soon, Allie! We love you!

Allie is lucky to have you as a neighbor. I can’t IMAGINE having to eat cookies thru a syringe this time of year. Poor, sweet girl! This looks yummy…a great inspiration for the kids and I to eat a few less cookies and more berry bliss smoothies!
